Scholarship Essay Entry – Victoria M.

Throughout my 20 years of life I have always had big goals and thus driving myself to attain them. One of these goals was simple. What did I want to do with my life? I knew I wanted to do something that would change my community, serve the public and place myself in a position to guide individuals to a better way of life. I believe small changes everyday can create huge outcomes. Volunteering is a large part of keeping where we live healthy. Without others donating their time we wouldn't have programs or events that keep our community strong.

I spent the majority of my high school career playing basketball and working at a retail store. It wasn't until I became captain of the high school basketball team, and promoted to a manager at such a young age that I knew I have the tools to lead others and make a difference. It was during that time in my life I knew becoming a police officer would be perfect for me.

When I moved to Lethbridge I wanted to get involved in the community, especially if it meant helping those that can't help themselves. I started volunteering my time at the Humane Society and slowly began to learn more about the people, the community and various social events. The time I spend at the humane society makes me feel empowered, whether it be helping someone find an addition to their family or care for those that can't help themselves. Like I said, one small change creates a huge outcome. Without volunteers or myself there would be no one there to make a difference.

I have recently finished my first year at the Lethbridge College taking the Criminal Justice program. I plan to finish the diploma program and gain a fulfilling job serving the public, my community and those that can't be heard. A police officer is expected to know the community they serve and strive to make change through ethical decisions and positive leadership. I plan to make a difference as small as one person at a time or a large as the community as a whole.
