Scholarship Essay Entry – Spencer H.

I run my life on three basic principles - service, efficiency and constant improvement. I try to make service to those around me part of daily life. I do my best to carry these three principles into my personal life and professional career.

I have been involved in service in my community and abroad my whole life. I have also been a member of the local scouting program wherever I have lived. When I was younger I would help clean highways and freeways, shovel sidewalks, clean yards and do what I could to help those in need. I also served a fourteen month mission for my church in New Mexico and Texas.

In the workplace I go beyond my job description to help my coworkers. I worked as a production accountant at a gas plant for about a year. I saw that there were some tasks that could be automated, so I wrote code to do this. With a push of a button the plant operators could now do work that previously took 2 hours, which now freed up time for more important work. I have always disliked the waste of time or resources in any facet of life or work.

That is why I am pursuing my education as a business analyst. One of the purposes of a business analyst is to fix problems before they begin in order to save time, money, and perhaps the projects themselves. IAG Consulting released a report called The Impact of Business Requirements on the Success of Technology Projects. One point included in the report is that "68% of companies are more likely to have a marginal project or outright failure than a success due to the way they approach business analysis." These resources are stretched thin enough as it is. We need to use them to the best of our ability, and this is why we need better business analysts in the workforce.

The amount of money I make should not be my measure of success in life. The friends I make, how strong my family is, and the happiness of my family and myself are the measures of my success. Money is still is required in order to have the lifestyle I choose. As a business analyst I will be able to help others to simplify their work and have more time for family, friends, and community.
