Scholarship Essay Entry – Rebecca A.
Ever since I was in elementary school, I have known that I want to be a writer, more specifically a novelist. Now, writing books may not find the cure for cancer or discover the solution for world peace. I firmly believe that words can change the world. I have always had a voracious love of reading, one that naturally segued into wanting to create my own stories, my own worlds. While I know that the road to publication will not be easy, I know that it will be worth it. I want nothing more than for kids to enjoy reading as much as I have and if that means writing the books they want to read, I’m willing to take up the gauntlet. With the words in their hands and smiles on their faces, those children will go on to do great things. My words and stories may not be the reason that a little boy decides to run for President. I like to think that escaping into dream worlds and running alongside characters they grow to love is something that cannot be duplicated by video games or movies. There is something ethereal in turning the page to find a new twist in the road. By desiring to write my own stories, I am returning the favor that I owe so many authors who guided me through childhood and adolescence. My mission is to spread literacy and the joy of reading. I want to see the looks on kids’ faces when they fall down the rabbit hole, so to speak. So how is going to college to major in English going to change the world? I’m going to school to learn anything and everything that I can about the English language because I want to share my beloved words with others and to spread the gift of the written word to those who don’t know it. When you think of it like that, the pen truly is mightier than the sword.
