Scholarship Essay Entry – Nicole M.
Making a difference in the world is a choice. It is a choice that is inevitable, at some point in our lives we all have to decide if we want to make a difference and potentially change the world. Although I may not be able to stand up and tell the world that in ten years I will have inspired someone to face their biggest fear, or provided a child with education I will be able to say I chose to make a difference. When asked why I want to be an engineer I think of a love for math, a desire for knowledge and understanding, the endless possibilities the engineering profession can offer me, but most of all I think of the freedom it can give me to choose how I want to make a difference in the world. Engineers may not be able to heal the sick in third world countries, or inspire and teach tomorrows generation, but we can change the world if we choose to. Through engineering you have the skills to find a solution to provide those third world countries with the fresh water and shelter they need to remain healthy. In an attempt to limit the effect a natural disaster would have on a nation we could improve the structural integrity of buildings to avoid having to experience the devastation an earthquake or tornado can cause in seconds. Providing more fuel efficient modes of transportation through aerodynamics and design engineering I can help preserve our ozone layer to keep the world a safe place for generations to come. Engineers have the ability to touch every aspect of a persons life if they choose to. I dream of being able to help people around the world before they need it. So what am I going to do with the rest of my life? Today I am unable to completely answer, but I can say “I am going to make a difference”.
