Scholarship Essay Entry – Joshua B.

When I was younger I was told that I could do anything I wanted. Whether or not the advisor believed that or not at the time, I am entering a stage in my life in which I truly believe this statement. With each year I expand my knowledge and my view of the world and humanity. The hard work I have put in allows me to continually meet and surpass my expectations for myself; limits are no match for persistent effort.

I plan on being a doctor one day, and though I try not to get ahead of myself, it is impossible not to dream of the future. The prospect of helping multitudes of people through their darkest moments fuels my resolve, and I know this is how I can do the most good in the world. My aspirations take me all over the world, sometimes for travel and other times for work. I can see trips to impoverished Africa, and to disaster stricken parts of the world. To be involved in the rescue in such a tragedy as the Haiti disaster, or Hurricane Katrina would not only change the world, but I am absolutely positive it would change me equally as much.

Though I may be young and inexperienced, I see injustice around myself and have a desire to change this. The only problem is age though; the world doesn't take you seriously at twenty years of age. I would fix everything if I could, but it would take more than a few lifetimes to do that. So instead I will concentrate on helping people in health, and hopefully through my endeavours I will also educate people on how to help themselves, and those around them.

I have been told since my youth that I am the future. My cohorts and I are the next generation and will one day run the world, and hopefully this world will be better than the one at present. Each and every generation has improved upon its predecessor in some way, and my generation will be no different. I look at my peers and know that through hard work we can change everything. I am excited for the days to come, and I look forward to seeing my successors rise, and to live young and free.
