Scholarship Essay Entry – Devon B.

Leo Rosten once said that “the purpose of life is not to be happy - but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make some difference that you have lived at all.” I believe that if you find something that makes you matter, that makes you productive and makes you useful, you will have found happiness.  I also believe that I will achieve all of these goals by becoming a nurse. The title of a nurse has a lot behind it. This includes the knowledge of health, the practice of medicine, dedicated hours put towards bettering someone’s life and a caring heart. When all of these attributes are put together a difference can be made in the world whether it’s big or small. I want to be that difference.

One organization that has always inspired me to want to make a difference is “Doctors without Borders.” Their goal is to assist and give attention to people in over 60 countries whose survival has been threatened by violence, neglect and catastrophe. One of my dreams is to eventually be on this amazing health care team.  To benefit and make a difference in anyone’s life, especially those who are in desperate need would be an amazing opportunity. To improve the health of even a single person would already be making the world a better place. Helping and caring for others is what nurses do best and I plan to go above and beyond to do the best job I possibly can.

Before my goals and dreams stretch to become that big I would first like to help others in the local community. I would like to be a volunteer nurse at local schools and senior centers to be able to distribute vaccines or medications and provide any other assistance that I may. Even taking a job at a community hospital would still allow me to help others in their times of need. Sometimes delicate attention, compassion and a little understanding can go a long way. There are many dreams that I have for myself. I have all the ambition just too little time.

Helping others is so rewarding and something that would make me feel like an amazing person. I would love to matter in someone else’s life and to make a difference. That is my biggest dream above all. By pursuing a career in nursing I have the capability to make the smallest changes or the biggest changes. Either way I would still be achieving my dreams and be living a satisfying life just trying to make the world a better place. I want to be that difference.
