Scholarship Essay Entry – Connor M.
English poet and politician Joseph Addison once said, “three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.” I wholeheartedly agree with Addison’s statement and throughout my high school and university experience thus far, I have been striving to achieve those “three grand essentials.” Whether it is something to do (like volunteering my time to a local youth group) or something to love (like an intense game of football with my Calgary football league) or something to hope for (like pursuing my goal of a higher education at the University of Alberta), I always give it my best effort, and routinely do what I do with infinite passion and dedication.
I have always been taught that hard work opens many doors and that striving for excellence builds character and dreams are fulfilled. As a young man about to return to University to start my third year of studies I have started to realize that with determination and a goal, all things are possible.
For as long as I can remember I have been encouraged to participate in many activities. Whether it is sports, clubs, activities, work, volunteering, or anything else that makes up my day, I am driven to accomplish my goals with enthusiasm and passion. From an early age, sports have dominated my life. The aspect of competition and the motivation to become the best at what I do has always fueled me. My experience with sports throughout my life has been more than just a past time to me, but has also taught me many essential lessons. Etiquette, sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork and dedication are all values that I have learned by means of participation in sports.
I enjoy both extracurricular and community service activities for many reasons as well. Helping out with the Mustard Seed Organization was a way to reach out to people less fortunate than myself and realizing that each person possessed their own unique gifts and abilities and should be treated with respect and kindness. I also see my extracurricular and public involvement as a way to give back to the community and to offer encouragement and guidance to people around me who deserve the same opportunity. I do everything I do because it is what I love, it is what gives me hope and ultimately it is what truly defines who I am.
My ultimate goal is to achieve my Bachelor degree in Engineering and begin working in the Material Engineering Field. Volunteering my time to a local hockey team as a coach or as mentor for youth pursuing their dream on a Football field is something I believe I can fulfill. I have learned from my parents the importance of giving back and by volunteering and giving time as well as financial assistance is a gift that will benefit many. Encouraging others to pursue the “three grand essentials” would definitely be the real vision I would hold for my community.
