Scholarship Essay Entry – Brittany O.

When I try to picture my life in ten years I see a couple 100 acres of land here, 4 quarters horses there, and 80 cows off in the distance. This image is very similar to my life now. When you were 18 what did you see? In the last 5 years I have changed this image a thousand times in my head and could never quite make up my mind, I wanted to be a lawyer, a veterinarian, an architect, I wanted to live in the city, and I wanted to live on an acreage. As you can see, there were many points in my life I wasn’t really sure what I wanted.

This is exactly why I took a year off school, to figure it out. After working in the restaurant industry at many different position’s, meeting new people, and learning the in’s and out’s of a business from the people who hired me and my dad from his perspective of running his own business, I am confident on the decision that I have made. That is exactly why I am enrolled in my first year in the Bachelor of Commerce program at RDC for 2010-2011.

When I was working in the service industry one of my fellow co-workers, who I was training at the time, asked me what my favourite part of my job was after a very stressful day at work. I wanted to give her the best and most honest answer so that she would have something to look forward too in her new job, so I paused for a moment to think about it. I replied by saying “Making people smile every day!” She was astonished by this answer, after all the cons we had endured during the day, she couldn’t believe that I would have anything positive to say about it.

Later on that night I thought to myself what a better place this world would be if that were every person’s daily goal, simply just to bring a smile to a complete stranger. Therefore whatever path I decide after my 4 years of commerce education whether it be; banking, restaurant or hospitality, or a small business of my own, that will be my personal and business goal; to make a difference, one person, and one day at a time.
