Youth: The voice of dissent
It's our job as the youth of western society to be the voice of dissent, to rebel and not follow the majority. This comes easy when given our perspective. The things we see on the news are written by those that usually don't share our opinions or thoughts; the writers haven't had the same experiences as our generation. We are Generation Y, and we have become far disconnected from the Baby Boomers.
Recently there was a news story on TV going around discussing how youth today are lazy, and how they live off their parents well into their late twenties. The story talked about how our generation isn't following suit and buying houses, buying cars, getting married and starting a family like they're supposed to. They interviewed people on the street who said "Kick them out of the house and tell them to get a job."
It's sad... It's sad to see that there are still so many unaware people who don't understand the socio-economical reasons why the youth today live at home for longer and longer periods of time.
So why is our generation living at home until their late 20s you ask? It's simple, because we can't afford to move out! This isn't the 70's; the Canadian dollar has been massively devalued since then. It's now at the point where someone has to choose between living at home or going into poverty. With 50 year long mortgages now our generation will never own their own homes; we will have to pass the mortgage on to our children. This is a different day and age, the youth isn't lazy, it's Educated!
We stay at home to develop our skills in the work world, to get an education so we can have employment which pays more than $8 per hour. None of the youth wants to starve just to feed the age old paradigms of previous generations. Interview us for a change; ask us the questions that matter. Just because we may not say what you want us to doesn't mean that our thoughts aren't of importance. We are the future!
In addition to being the voice of dissent, it's also our job to let each other know when something cool comes along. So if you don't already know about it, go to www.youngfreealberta.com and check out what the Young & Free Account can do for you.
