Webthing of the Week: copyright for Canadians

Jere and I are off to Provost to take in the Splash 'N Smash this weekend. If you're in the area, make sure you stop by to say a few words in our Speaker's Corner or to get inked Y&F style.

Today's Webthing of the Week has to do with something that's been making headlines recently. As a self-professed geek, it's something that I am very passionate about – but all Canadians are affected by this issue, so it's something worth looking into.

I'm referring to the new bill proposed by Industry Minister Jim Prentice regarding copyright in Canada. It basically carries over many of the same characteristics as the United States' Digital Millennium Copyright Act (or DMCA), which has been widely seen as damaging since its introduction in 1997.

Of course, it's up to you to read and formulate your own opinion about the proposed bill. Personally, I find that this proposed copyright legislation does nothing to advance Canadian interests – in fact, I see it hindering the interests of creators, owners, distributors, and citizens alike.

Whether you want to read more about Canada's DMCA or find out what you can do to stop it, Copyright for Canadians is the place to go. It provides links to various articles and blogs discussing the Canadian Copyright issue, as well as information on how you can act federally by getting in contact with your MP (my letter definitely went out last week).

So do your bit! Take five minutes to get proactive and to spread some awareness this weekend.
