"Generation Why?
The other day, it was brought to my attention that our generation (people aged 17-25) is being referred to as “Generation Y.” Alphabetically it makes sense, following those Generation X-ers that are before us, but I couldn’t help but think that maybe we should be called “Generation Why?”
It’s all about the social media these days. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace...the list goes on. And I believe that all of these outlets have made us as a society far more inquisitive than those in the past. I know a variety of different things solely from the information that I hold in the palm of my hand. My BlackBerry is my lifeline. Here I can access my Twitter, my Facebook, Google my life away, and check my email from anywhere I have cell service. My Twitter connects me with everything from CNN to my local radio station...to NHL updates and even what Ellen DeGeneres is up to. If I want to know what’s on TV tonight, I check out TV Guide’s tweets. If I have an itch for current events? I read Anderson Cooper’s. If I need to know the lyrics to a song or if I want to know the exact distance between Calgary and Edmonton...I Google it.
I don’t know if I would exactly call myself a fountain of knowledge because of these outlets, but I have learned a lot from them. All of the readily available information allows us all to ask “why?” and expand our awareness. By making it easier to ask questions, the technology world increases our understanding of the real world.
The large amount of social media has made me realize one important thing: I ask more questions because I can get more answers."
