APPLICANT: Myles Peterman is our first applicant for the Young & Free Alberta Spokesperson!

We just had our first applicant! Myles Peterman is an 18-year-old part-time student from Edmonton, Alberta.

"High school came and went and now I’m out in the real world (yikes!). With my heart on my sleeve, I have been looking for work to support my future career as an actor and filmmaker. I find myself constantly working odd jobs around the city (wedding videos, landscaping, writing and acting) and I love it. I have also been thoroughly enjoying my course for professional writing at Grant MacEwan. I am looking ahead at the future with a positive attitude. I hope to be a leader in the following year, while learning about free youth, our Alberta, and myself.

P.S. I seriously love filmmaking and blogging."

"Today I made a stupid purchase. That’s right, I’ve freely admitted it. Like millions of others making unwise consumer decisions, so have I. No it’s not that I bought a car, or a rubix cube that I’ll never use (or solve for that matter). I spent $10 on a burger and fries. Now don’t get me wrong; a burger and fries every once in a while isn’t terrible. The fact of the matter is, it was $10 and I easily could have eaten a healthier alternative at home. Usually I’m the first one to brand a certain golden-arched establishment as a heart attack waiting to happen, but this time, I wasn’t one of the billion served. My $10 dropped at a popular 24-hour diner. I don’t know why people opt to pay $10 to have something made for them, that doesn’t necessarily taste that good, and is not at all good for you.

I propose a challenge. Next time you want to order out, or go grab some fried chicken, spend a little less and have a healthy alternative. Or just go to a grocery store; buy all of the same ingredients (those 11 herbs and spices can be found somewhere online). Save some money, and stop your heart from pumping gravy. So do tell: what is it that makes you choose fast food over home cooking? And what is the worst purchase you’ve ever made? (Calories not included)"

Great job Myles. Too bad about the lousy burger though. Sometimes you just need to take a break and eat out, but for $10 you'd think it would be a good burger. Maybe go for a wrap next time!

Thanks dude, and right back at ya! Great with a camera, and I am also sorry that your burger sucked. Isn't it strange that we're always to busy to pack a lunch, but it would take ten minutes of our time... verses buying it which in the end takes up about an hour of our time, because thats equal to the part of our pay check that just paid for our not so fantastic burgers! You make excellent points.

FACT: The thing I enjoy most about eating fries would be the ketchup... I guess what I’m trying to say is that I too can easily go to a super market establishment and purchase myself a bottle of supple ketchup to enjoy at home. Myles I think that your blog not only brings awareness about unhealthy food choices, but also addressing the importance of budgeting, and planning ahead. For poor students such as myself who lack time and money (or so I’m convinced) to make these meals, I often make poor consumer choices(much like the one you did) which can influences my health and thus my performance at school. I find that it is very seldom that I consider “the facts” about my meals, Fact Example: If I were to compromise my $9.00 rice bowel from Sankyo (which is sooo good that I crave and desire it and would recommend it to those who have money and are into somewhat-unhealthy choices this choice would be the best choice! ) and save that money to put towards my groceries for a month, I bet you dollars to doughnuts that I would most likely be able to eat three meals a day instead of going with ought food. I think that poverty and mal nutrition are a serious issues that not only affect students but a mass majority of the population. I found your blog enlightening because you addressed issues that are and have been experienced by everyone, This is an important "must have" quality in a leader; this is why I vote Myles Jordan Peterman.

Note: sorry that’s what I got from reading your blog.

PS: I think you’ll be a great president some day ;) well I mean…. first young and free Alberta spokes person… and then the world, oh yeah its all part of the plan …. Keep up the good work!

Hey MJ... good luck buddy! Another thing to think about when choosing to eat out is to eat at a locally run restaurant. Support small business owners instead of places like Denny's or McDonalds. And it's a bonus if they try to cook with ingredients that are locally grown and farmed.

I just listened to your fun, informative and entertaining podcast. Just like your video, top notch. I also have made unwise purchases and after reading your blog and listening to your podcast, realize I have spent alot of "green" on the changing music/movie format scene. Should have stuck to rentals, at least they get re-cycled (from renter to renter, then re-sold). In regards to healthier alternatives, I guess that applies to all aspects of life, whether its what we put in our bodies and/or what and how we entertain ourselves. Basically it is all food, no matter which of the senses aborb it. Keep the info coming and good luck with your campaign to be the next spokesperson for Young and Free Alberta. You seem to have an air of confidence, a flair for the comedic, a sense of sensibility and a down to earth quality. I thought your video was great. It moved right along and kept my attention from beginning to end.

My vote is for you, Myles.

One more thought - I also enjoyed your blogs at Myles - Uncut. Well written, thought provoking with a touch of humour. Well done!

I LOVE your video. The best of the bunch. I believe that you are the best suited for this job, in representing all the youth in alberta. You are a personable guy who will talk to anybody. After following all the parts in your campaign I feel you are the BEST candidate for the young and free spokesperson of alberta.

Your blogs are to the point, and I love your writing style. The subjects of your blogs are easy to relate to, and I keep coming back, excited to read. They are very funny, but at the same time address important issues for the young society. Who would have thought we would be talking about the 'dirty' video AGAIN!, but I feel very strongly about this crisis in young girls today. This is a huge issue that needs to be brought to the attention of the general public, and talked about.

Myles: Great video and blog on consumption. [words from an older generation]. I will watch the other videos and definitely yours again as I did not catch the title of the book, the words on the medal but know that these amongst all images other than yourself were carefully and thoughtfully put into your video. Hey MJ!

Just one thing I wanted to point out for anyone's consideration... I just watched each person's video, and most of the contestants appear to believe that this is a popularity and achievement contest. Many talk about everything they have done in their life and some simply put video/pictures of themselves accomplishing 'major feats'. This is not what we care about... so what... many of us who arent applying can do even more than them! The point of this competition is to find an individual with strong intellect, and one that understand about connecting with others, how to do it, and the importance of it!

You definetly nailed it on the head! I think you did the best job of describing that througout the video, you did not simply list off all the accomplishments of your life. Kudos to you for only keeping in whats important!

Also, there appears to be only 3 people that understand what the rule means, when the video must be 60 seconds or less; you, James Morrison, and Alyx Nanji. Way to actually obey the rules!

But again that most important thing is about connection, which is what the position and this site are about - and most competitors have not shown anything to do with this... only their personal accomplisments.

I ask that any voters - and the judges - please take that into consideration!

Obviously, Tyrell Bruckner didn’t watch & read the same video & blogs that the rest of us have! I found Myles video to be creative, informative, humorous and to the point. It held my attention from beginning to end, and moved at a very fast pace, with such energy, that it left me wanting more. The editing was smooth and flawless. Myles displayed confidence, a flair for the comedic, a sense of sensibility and a down to earth quality. Qualities I would look for in a spokesperson.

I find Myles writing style to be informative, serious, yet humorous and covering a variety of topics such as the environment/energy consumption in his blog: “Go Green Save Green” – where he discusses “How to save the planet and your budget at the same time.” In his blog: “Don't Judge A Book By Its (Under The) Cover(s)” - he asks the question: “What do you think we can do as young and free adults to help the even younger generation see the difference between realistic self-expectations and the screen of the media?” and states that “The youth of today have to let it be known that sex may sell, but as free individuals, it promotes more negativity in our society than anything else.” These sound like important issues to me! And what would be life, without some humour, as Myles clearly displays in his blog: “Mr. Spiderman, can I go to the bathroom?” We all need to laugh and I certainly did reading this blog. Myles asks, “What are you thankful for?” in his blog: “Incoming Pumpkin Pie”. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I know that I am thankful for individuals like Myles, for all that he has given and for all that he has to give. I couldn’t think of a better person to represent the youth of Alberta. Vote Myles on October 17th, a real leader!!!
